My name is Tamara Masa and I am a Toronto-based 35mm Film Photographer (that is a mouthful, sorry). I moved to Canada from Serbia at the age of 6, and ever since then I have considered myself an interdisciplinary artist. In 2020, I found two of my late grandfather's film cameras (an Agfa Paramat and a Kodak Retina IIa) and instantly something sparked in me as I began my journey with 35mm film photography.
The three major photography series that I have been working on are 'Artefacts'; using pieces of history within familial lineage as well as my own past in a setting that juxtaposes their importance, 'Subjects in Creativity'; artists engaging in their crafts and evoking emotion through movement, and 'Muse'; playing around with multiple definitions of the term and capturing individuals in vulnerable states.
My fascination with film photography comes from the need for delayed gratification in a time when instant gratification is the norm. Film photography requires patience because until the photo is developed, you really do not know exactly what it is that you have taken a photo of. Nowadays, with digital technology, we lack the patience and the desire to seek out the honest & natural.
Below are three examples of my work (one from each of the series):
'Subjects In Creativity'
For a long time I have been obsessed with collecting phone cases, always seeing them as the most exciting accessory, and then one day during a photoshoot I had a massive realization. I thought about the irony of having film photography on phone cases, as the cameras that I am using were created in the late 50's and 60's and my phone was made in the 21st century. Almost instantly I knew that I was going to combine those two passions and put my film photography on phone cases.
I've shown you a few glamorous shots above, and you can see more in the "My Work" section, but I thought that I would also show you some of the things that 35mm film photographers have to deal with on a daily basis when it comes to developing photographs. Below are some that just did NOT turn out, to give you an idea of how wonderfully difficult and rewarding this endeavour really is. On my computer I've labelled this folder as "what do you see?", because I typically have to play guessing games and remind myself of what I was trying to take a picture of!
So, here we are today. And if you read all of this and feel like you need more irony, film photography, a new phone case or just want to support a local artist, then you've come to the right place. Browse my collection(s) and let's illuminate the better times!
